A reading time calculator estimates how long a document will take to read from its word count and your reading speed — useful for planning study sessions, blog posts and presentations.

The maths

  • Minutes = word count ÷ reading speed (wpm)
  • Hours = minutes ÷ 60
  • Pages = word count ÷ 250 (a typical page)

The average adult reads around 250 words per minute; skimming is faster, dense technical text slower.

Examples

  • 800 words at 250 wpm = 3.2 minutes
  • 5,000 words at 250 wpm = 20 minutes = ~20 pages
  • Faster readers (400 wpm) halve the time

Frequently asked questions

What's a good reading speed?

Around 250 wpm is typical for comprehension. Speed readers claim 400–700 wpm, but comprehension usually drops. Pick a speed that matches how carefully you need to read.

How many words are on a page?

About 250 for a typical novel or article. Academic papers and large-print text differ, so treat the page count as a rough guide.
