Tile Calculator

Calculate how many tiles you need for a floor or wall. Enter the area size and your tile dimensions to get the area, the tile count, and the recommended quantity including a waste allowance.

Enter the length and width of the surface to be tiled (in metres) and the dimensions of a single tile (in centimetres). Add a waste percentage to cover cuts and breakages.

Area size
Tiles required
Recommended quantity (incl. waste)

A tile calculator turns the size of your floor or wall and your tile dimensions into the number of tiles to buy, with a waste allowance for cuts, breakages and future repairs.

The maths

  • Area = length × width
  • Tile area = tile length × tile width (converted to metres)
  • Tiles = ceil(area / tile area)
  • With waste = ceil(tiles × (1 + waste%))

Examples

  • 5 m × 4 m = 20 m² with 30 × 30 cm tiles = 223 tiles, 245 with 10% waste
  • Diagonal layouts and large format tiles usually need more waste
  • Keep a few spare boxes for future repairs

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I allow?

10% is standard for a straight lay. Allow 15% for diagonal patterns, 20% for herringbone or intricate layouts, and always keep spares.

Do I deduct for doors and windows?

For walls, subtract the area of large openings. For floors, small thresholds rarely matter against the waste allowance.

Just for the giggles, much love.
