Flooring Calculator

Estimate the flooring materials required for a room. Enter the room size and the plank or tile dimensions to get the floor area, the units required and the total area including a waste allowance.

Enter the room length and width in metres, and the dimensions of one plank or tile in centimetres. Add a waste percentage to cover cuts, especially with diagonal or patterned layouts.

A flooring calculator works out how many planks or tiles you need for a room from its dimensions and the unit size, with a waste allowance for cuts and pattern matching.

The maths

  • Floor area = room length × room width
  • Unit area = plank/tile length × width (in metres)
  • Units = ceil(floor area / unit area)
  • Total with waste = floor area × (1 + waste%)

Examples

  • 6 m × 4 m = 24 m² with 120 × 15 cm planks = 134 planks
  • Laminate and click flooring usually need a 5–10% waste margin
  • Buy all boards from one batch to match the dye lot

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I allow?

5–10% for a straightforward rectangular room with straight-laid planks. Allow more for diagonal layouts, herringbone or rooms with lots of alcoves and angles.

Should I measure skirting and doorways?

Measure the full floor area; the waste allowance covers minor features. Remove the area of large permanent fixtures only if you're confident.

Just for the giggles, much love.
