Percentage Grade Calculator

Turn a test score into a percentage and a letter grade, and see how many more points you need to reach the next grade boundary.

Enter the score you achieved and the total possible marks to get your percentage grade, a letter grade and the points needed for an A.

Grade
Points needed for 90% (A)
Points needed for 80% (B)

A grade percentage is simply your score divided by the total, times 100. This calculator converts that into a letter grade and tells you how close you are to the next boundary.

The maths

Grade % = score / total × 100

Letter bands used here: A ≥ 90, B ≥ 80, C ≥ 70, D ≥ 60, F < 60. Many schools use different cut-offs or add + / − tiers.

Examples

  • 42 / 60 = 70% (C)
  • 85 / 100 = 85% (B)
  • Need 90% on a 60-mark test? Score at least 54

Frequently asked questions

Are these letter bands universal?

No. Grading scales vary by school and country. The bands here are a common US default — always confirm your institution's cut-offs.

What is a weighted grade?

A weighted grade counts some assessments more than others (e.g. an exam worth 50%). Use the GPA calculator for credit-weighted averaging across courses.

Just for the giggles, much love.
