Fence Calculator

Calculate fencing materials from the fence length and panel width. See how many panels and posts you need and confirm the total fence length.

Enter the total fence length and the panel width. The calculator rounds the panel count up to cover the full run, then adds one post per panel plus an end post.

Usually equals the panel width

Total fence length

A fence calculator tells you how many fence panels and posts to buy for a given run. It rounds the panel count up so the whole length is covered and adds a post at each junction plus the two ends.

The maths

  • Panels = fence length ÷ panel width, rounded up
  • Posts = panels + 1 (one after each panel, plus the far end)

For a corner or gate you may need an extra post or two; allow for those manually.

Examples

  • 20 m fence with 1.8 m panels = 12 panels
  • That needs 13 posts
  • Wider panels mean fewer panels and posts for the same run

Frequently asked questions

Why panels + 1 posts?

Each panel sits between two posts, so N panels need N+1 posts — one at the start, one between every pair of panels, and one at the end.

What about concrete for the posts?

This counts panels and posts only. Budget a couple of bags of post-mix concrete per hole depending on your soil and post size.

Just for the giggles, much love.
