Gravel Calculator

Calculate the gravel needed for landscaping, driveways and foundations. Enter the area and depth to get the volume, the weight and how many bags to buy.

Enter the length and width in metres and the depth in centimetres. Adjust the gravel density (about 1,600 kg/m³ for typical aggregate) and the weight of one bag to see how many bags you need.

A gravel calculator turns the size of your area into the volume, weight and bag count of gravel to order — useful for paths, driveways, drainage and as a sub-base under paving.

The maths

  • Volume = length × width × depth
  • Weight = volume × density (typical gravel ≈ 1,600 kg/m³)
  • Bags = ceil(weight / bag weight)

Examples

  • 5 m × 4 m × 10 cm = 2 m³ ≈ 3,200 kg ≈ 128 bags (25 kg)
  • Looser decorative gravel can be lighter — lower the density
  • Order ~10% extra for settling and spreading

Frequently asked questions

What density should I use?

Crushed stone and pea gravel are around 1,500–1,700 kg/m³. Loose decorative gravel can be lighter. Check the supplier's figure if accuracy matters.

Should I order loose or bagged?

For larger areas, loose gravel delivered by the tonne is far cheaper than bags. Bags suit small jobs and easy handling.

Just for the giggles, much love.
