What % off?

Know the original and sale price? Find the discount percentage that was applied.

Discount applied
Amount off

A discount calculator turns a percentage-off sign into the actual dollars you'll pay. Use it to check a sale really is a bargain, or to reverse-engineer the discount from an original and sale price.

The maths

  • Sale price = original × (1 − discount%/100)
  • Discount % = (original − sale) / original × 100
  • Add sales tax on the discounted price, not the original.

Examples

  • $200 with 25% off = $150 (save $50)
  • $150 sale from a $200 original = 25% off
  • A 'was/now' tag sometimes rounds up — always verify

Frequently asked questions

Should tax be applied before or after the discount?

After. Sales tax is charged on the actual price paid (the discounted amount), not the original.

Can I stack multiple discounts?

Stores apply them sequentially, not additively. A 20% discount followed by another 20% equals 36% off overall, not 40%.

Just for the giggles, much love.
