Pace Calculator

Calculate your running or cycling pace and speed from a distance and a finish time, shown per kilometre, per mile and as average speed.

Enter the distance and your time (hours, minutes, seconds) to get your average speed and pace per km and per mile. Pace is shown in decimal minutes (5.5 = 5 minutes 30 seconds per unit).

Pace (min/km)
Pace (min/mi)

A pace calculator converts your finish time over a known distance into a per-kilometre and per-mile pace plus average speed — essential for setting race targets and comparing runs.

The maths

  • Speed = distance / time
  • Pace = time / distance
  • 1 mile = 1.60934 km

Pace is shown in decimal minutes: 5.5 means 5 min 30 sec. To convert the decimal part to seconds, multiply by 60.

Examples

  • 10 km in 50:00 = 5:00/km (5.0), 12 km/h
  • A marathon (42.2 km) in 3:00:00 = 4:15/km
  • Lower pace = faster; higher speed = faster

Frequently asked questions

How do I read a decimal pace?

The whole number is minutes; multiply the decimal by 60 for seconds. 5.25 = 5 minutes 15 seconds per km.

Why are pace and speed different?

Pace is time per distance (min/km) and is what runners track. Speed is distance per time (km/h) and is what cyclists and drivers use. They're two ways of describing the same thing.

Just for the giggles, much love.
