Exponent Calculator

Calculate powers and roots. Enter a base and an exponent to get the result, plus the square root and cube root of the base.

Enter a base number and an exponent (power). The calculator returns base raised to that power, along with the square root and cube root of the base.

Result (base^exponent)
Square root of base
Cube root of base

An exponent calculator raises a base number to a power and also gives the square and cube roots of the base — useful for areas, volumes, compound growth and geometry.

The maths

  • Power = baseexponent (multiply the base by itself that many times)
  • Square root = base½
  • Cube root = base⅓ (works for negative bases too)

Examples

  • 2^3 = 8
  • 5^2 = 25, and √25 = 5
  • Cube root of 27 = 3; cube root of −8 = −2

Frequently asked questions

Can the exponent be a fraction or negative?

Yes. A fractional exponent is a root (e.g. base^0.5 is the square root) and a negative exponent means one over the power (e.g. 2^-2 = 0.25).

Why is the cube root shown for negative numbers but the square root isn't?

Negative numbers have a real cube root but no real square root. The square root output uses the absolute value so it always returns a number; check the sign separately.
